Theory and Aural

Theory and aural training is integrated into my piano lessons as it makes sense to link these skills directly to the music you are learning to play!  However if you learn another instrument with a different teacher and are looking for a ‘top-up’ I can help you, specifically with the ABRSM theory exams and aural tests. Theory lessons

Personally I love teaching theory, but sometimes it gets a bad press as students can find it taxing.   If you want to take ABRSM practical exams 6-8 you will need to pass their Grade 5 Theory exam (or Jazz or Practical Musicianship Grade 5).  I provide clear and engaging lessons that will ensure that you not only pass the exams, but also enjoy learning along the way!  I’m patient and enthusiastic with lots of experience teaching theory to individuals and in the classroom.  I enjoy making my own theory teaching resources, especially games for children, and using technology to bring you customised theory lessons.

Aural lessons

I can help you with the aural tests for ABRSM and TCL music exams.  You’ll find it so useful to develop your listening skills and walk into the exam with confidence.  I have lots of effective strategies to help you learn how to use your ear best.  Often it’s useful just to have live practice of the tests, particularly if your instrumental teacher isn’t also a confident pianist.   My patient nature and sunny personality will help put you at your ease immediately so you can relax and enjoy our lessons.
